Doom: The Dark Ages: Hell Fighter Ship Locations & Interactive Tracking Guide

Hell Fighter Ships are the fastest enemies in Doom: The Dark Ages — high-speed demonic scouts encountered exclusively during Mecha Dragon-mounted combat sections.

They leave a distinct green energy trail and attempt to flee the moment the Slayer engages. Destroying them yields +20 Gold per ship and completes four Mission Challenges spread across the dragon chapters.

Every spawn window and escape route is documented on the chapter maps — access them through MapMaster's interactive Doom: The Dark Ages game hub.

Four Ship Challenges, Four Rewards

Hell Fighter Ships appear in only four chapters, each with its own challenge and reward:

  • Cat and MouseChapter 5: The Holy City of Aratum: destroy all 3 Hell Fighter Ships → 50 Gold. The first ship is inside a tunnel at the start of the chapter — if it exits the tunnel before being destroyed, the entire chapter must be restarted (not just a checkpoint restart). This is the most commonly missed ship in the game.

  • Veteran PursuerChapter 13: From Beyond: destroy 2 Hell Fighter Ships → Reverent Impaler Weapon Skin. The only ship challenge that rewards a skin rather than Gold, making it the highest-value individual ship challenge in the campaign.

  • Expert StalkerChapter 14: Spire of Nerathul: destroy 2 Hell Fighter Ships → 50 Gold. Both ships spawn immediately after specific Points of No Return — checkpoint restart is available if either escapes.

  • Master HunterChapter 20: Resurrection: destroy 1 Hell Fighter Ship → 50 Gold. The ship spawns right after destroying the first hellmouth during the chapter's story sequence. Single target — the simplest of the four challenges.

How to Destroy Hell Fighter Ships

Hell Fighter Ships are built to outrun and outmanoeuvre the Mecha Dragon. Three techniques make the difference between a clean kill and a lost ship:

Maintain boost at all times.

Releasing boost for even a second lets the ship extend its lead to an unrecoverable distance. Hold boost continuously from the moment the green energy trail appears until the ship is destroyed.

Lead your shots.

Hell Fighter Ships move in unpredictable patterns. Aim slightly ahead of the green trail rather than directly at the ship — sustained fire into the predicted flight path connects far more reliably than tracking.

Restart from Checkpoint if a ship escapes.

Except for the Chapter 5 tunnel ship (which requires a full chapter restart if it exits the tunnel), a Checkpoint restart respawns the ship at its original spawn moment. This is significantly faster than replaying the full chapter.

Gold Yield

Across all four chapters, destroying every Hell Fighter Ship yields a total of 330 Gold — all in +20 increments per destroyed ship.

Combined with the 150 Gold in challenge rewards (Cat and Mouse + Expert Stalker + Master Hunter), Hell Fighter Ship sections are among the most Gold-dense sequences available outside of Artillery Cannon destruction runs.
